About MapBook

Fire Department MapBook was founded by a team of technology professionals who witnessed firsthand the challenges faced by fire departments and firefighters. After consulting with fire chiefs and frontline firefighters from volunteer and career fire departments, we identified a critical gap between available fire department technology and the fire mapping tools actually being used by fire departments in the field.

What we discovered was concerning: while expensive GIS systems and complex mapping software existed, most fire departments couldn't afford them, didn't have the technical staff to maintain them, or found them too complicated for emergency use. Meanwhile, there are generic mapping apps and emergency management tools on the market, but they consistently fall short of what frontline firefighters actually need—lacking fire-specific features, failing during offline scenarios, or being too complex for split-second decision making during emergency responses.

Traditional paper fire department map books, while reliable for fire departments, presented significant limitations for modern fire departments: fire department map books couldn't be updated in real-time, were difficult to share between fire department units, and provided no way for fire departments to integrate with modern fire dispatch systems or real-time fire department data sources.

We set out to create a fire department mapping solution that would maintain the reliability and simplicity that fire departments depend on, while adding the power and flexibility of modern digital fire department mapping tools.

Fire Department MapBook is developed by a team that includes active firefighters, experienced software engineers, UX designers, and fire service technology consultants. Our unique combination of real-world firefighting experience and technical expertise allows us to create mapping solutions that are both technically robust and practically useful for fire departments.
